Abstract

Exact analytical expressions for the positions of masses in a clamped, exponentially-graded coupled spring-mass system subjected to an initial localized disturbance are obtained using Fourier decomposition and the solution of linear difference equations. The dispersion relation is obtained along the way, and deviations from the homogeneous lattice results are noted.
