Hydrophilic and hydrophobic glass by direct current glow discharge low pressure plasma treatment

Abstract

Hydrophilic and hydrophobic glass surfaces were attained using a low pressure DC plasma device. Glass substrates were exposed to glow discharge Ar and Ar/N2 plasma. The sessile drop method was used to measure the contact angle of water in the untreated and treated samples. Glass substrates treated with Ar plasma exhibited hydrophilic property with the lowest measured contact angle of 3.77° compared with untreated glass (39.14°). Ar/N2 plasma treated glass coated with silicone oil has improved hydrophobic property with maximum contact angle of 96.54° for the 50 mA, 3 min treatment.
