Nematic alignment of particles in high-density limit of a modified Vicsek model
Abstract
We investigate the properties of a modified Vicsek model that incorporates strict exclusion conditions between particles in its high-density limit. An order parameter is introduced that describes the local density fluctuations of the modified Vicsek model. The resulting dynamics show similarity to that of a phase of liquid crystals where individual particles have loose parallel alignment called nematic phases. This type of Vicsek model can be a promising modeling scheme for clustering of compact granular systems, such as those with oriented particles, such as the vibrated granular rods.
