Identifying the busiest public transport stops in Metro Manila
Abstract
To design an effective public transportation network, it is necessary to make targeted improvements in stops most frequented by commuters. We propose a method to identify the busiest public transport (PT) stops, either by transit or through transfers, without the use of boarding-alighting (BA) surveys. There were 306 (4.60%) PT stops identified to be the most cost-effective targets for improvements on waiting and pedestrian infrastructure. Our findings can complement the status quo interpretations that can be drawn from BA surveys by providing insights on the effect of future improvements on a network. Our scheme can also be used on a more thorough analysis to identify high and low usage PT stops and the effect of proposed routes on easing the burden of PT hubs.
