Tidal deformations of black holes
Abstract
The deformability of a self-gravitating body under the effect of an external tidal field is a question of central interest in gravitational physics. In this talk, I will review recent work on the question of whether a black hole can become tidally deformed, which has profound implications for fundamental physics, astrophysics and gravitational-wave astronomy.
