Abstract

We investigate the stationary states and dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) in a sinusoidal potential by solving the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We utilize GPELab, an open access and robust Matlab toolbox which can simulate many comprehensive physics problems involving BECs. We varied the parameters of the potential and examined how the value of the ground state energy changed. For the dynamics, we were able to observe a single localized peak at t < 0.1, but the probability density speads out beyond this time. Localized peaks were also observed throughout the region of evolution, implying that for this system, it is possible for the bulk of the condensate to be found at one of these points corresponding to the peaks of the probability density.
