Effects of the amount of Bi2O3 addition and melting temperature on the surface morphology of GdBa2Cu3O7−δ films
Abstract
The effects of the amount of Bi2O3 and melting temperatures on the surface morphology of GdBCO films were studied. Films were observed to exhibit large island formations due to the addition of Bi2O3. Increasing the amount of Bi2O3 added enhances the melting of the sample, resulting to denser, more uniform surfaces and change in the grain structure of the island formations. Increasing the melting temperature naturally promotes the melting of the sample. A suitable melting temperature was found to be greater than 950oC to avoid remnants of powder on the film surface. The film with 10 wt% Bi2O3 addition and melt quenched at 1000oC exhibited the most favorable surface morphology compared to the other films.
