Effects of spatial barrier and tolerance on the spread of rumor: An agent-based simulation
Abstract
An agent-based model was used to simulate the dynamics of information transmission in the presence of hindrances. Also, a lattice simulation was utilized rather than the usual network-based simulation for information propagation. In reality, there are hindrances regarding information transmission, specifically tolerance (the resistance of an individual in accepting a rumor) and spatial barrier (physical barrier, which can be described as randomly oriented doors or openings, that hinders the transmission of rumors). This paper highlights the effects of spatial barrier and tolerance on the spread of rumor. In assigning tolerances and barrier orientations in each lattice site, a stochastic approach was implemented in the model. The results showed that a rumor takes longer time to completely spread in a population with increased tolerance. In addition, the population of spreaders in multiple doors lattice sites increases at a faster rate than in single door lattice sites.
