Abstract

The convergence of a Variational Monte Carlo method with Gaussian importance sampling (VMC-GIS), as applied to a two-dimensional time-independent quantum well, was improved by optimizing the standard deviation σ of the Gaussian probability distribution. The fastest convergence in attaining the ground state is obtained by using VMC-GIS with σ = 0.6.
