Factor of 5 increase in the axial resolution of a confocal system using attosecond laser pulses
Abstract
We increase the axial resolution of a confocal system by a factor of 5 by using attosecond laser pulses in a two-photon, confocal 4Pi setup. The resulting interference squeezes the axial point spread function from 600 nm to 110 nm. Chromatic broadening due to the ultrashort pulsewidth suppresses the interference sidelobes thus increasing image contrast. Optimum contrast is achieved with a 1 femtosecond pulse.
