Abstract

In June 2004, the United Nation's General Assembly declared 2005 as the International Year of Physics. 2005 marks the centennial of Albert Einstein's "Miraculous Year." In a burst of creativity in 1905 he wrote three papers that revolutionized our understanding of nature in all scales, from the atom to the cosmos. The aim of the International Year of Physics is to raise the general public's awareness in Physics and its importance.
Despite the fact that the findings of physics have tremendous impact in science, technology and society, enrollment in Physics and other science courses are declining around the world. As pressing matters become more global (environment, population, pandemics, renewable energy) we need a local pool of intellectual resources for local solutions, The contribution of physics and other sciences will be needed. Therefore the Physics communities in the Philippines must act together to improve the number and quality of Physics students, Physicists and Physics teachers.
The first step is to increase the public's appreciation of Physics. Several activities are being planned for 2005. The list is by no means final and volunteers are most welcome to add their events. In this special meeting session we invite you to join in the forum to discuss the major activities and a make a concerted stand for physics for the celebration of the International Year of Physics in the Philippines.
