Abstract

An investigation on the dynamics underlying an instance of First In-First Out (FIFO) queuing system — supermarket teller service, is presented. The efficiency of the system depends on the influx rate of costumers, the number of servers, and the average service rate. It is found out that the system could be under-, critically-, or over-utilized. The effect of introducing an express lane is also presented.
