Abstract

Holographic gratings were written in a methyl red-doped PDLC (E48:PVP). Grating type is seen to be dependent on the polarization of the writing beams. p-polarized beams make predominantly phase gratings while s-polarized beams record amplitude gratings. Photorefractivity, local poling and thermal effects are seen as the most probable mechanisms for grating formation.
