Abstract

The relationship between the intensity and the phase components of a speckle field or diffuse light has been discussed in the seminal work by Ervin Kolenovic [1]. A quantitative study on their degree of correlation to our knowledge has not been reported. Here speckle formation is simulated through the Fraunhofer diffraction of a random field with a circular aperture. Solutions to the absolute phase gradients from the phase and from the intensity patterns are then compared. Quantitative measures of the correlations of these solutions in the changes along x-, y- directions and the strains in the x- and y-directions are discussed. The results demonstrating spatial localization of high correlation regions may find applications in surface metrology.
