A spatiotemporal characterization of fuel pricing in the Philippines

Abstract

Fuel pricing in the Philippines was characterized by evaluating the mean, variance and inter-event time statistics of diesel and unleaded prices. It was found that Metro Manila has the cheapest diesel products whereas Tacloban has the costliest. Dipolog has the lowest unleaded prices while Dumaguete has the highest. Highly varying diesel and unleaded prices are found in Tacloban and Bacolod while the most stable ones are found in Cebu and General Santos, respectively. Fuel price increases or rollbacks generally occur 6 days, 13 days or 20 days after a price change. Understanding fuel price volatility is important since it affects human spending.
