Contact angle saturation in electrowetting using different electrode widths
Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the effect of voltage applied between a sessile drop and a metal strip. The drop is insulated from metal strips by a dielectric material coated with a hydrophobic layer. The width of metal strips used were w = 0.3, 0.6, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 mm. Results revealed that droplet deformation, measured using the change in contact angle, agrees with the
Lippmann-Young equation for Vapplied < Vsat. Contact angle saturation was observed at Vapplied ≥ Vsat,ave. Saturation voltage and change in contact angle decreased for width w from 0.3 mm to 1.0 mm. However deformation was greater for w > 1.0.
