Investigation on the influence of the interplanetary magnetic field on the equatorial electrojet using mutual information and transfer entropy
Abstract
This paper presents our initial study on the interaction between the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) using information theory, particularly, mutual information and transfer entropy. The data for IMF and EEJ were obtained from the ACE satellite and MAGDAS, respectively, while the calculation for the mutual information and transfer entropy were done using MATLAB. The interaction between EEJ and IMF is viewed as information exchange. It is shown that the interaction is relatively stronger in the dayside compared to the nightside. It is further shown that a counterintuitive information flow from the EEJ to the IMF occurs. A shift in the directionality of the information flow was observed during magnetic storms.
