Development of a Bernas-type ion source with an AC current driven filament cathode
Abstract
A modified Bernas-type ion source has been operated with the hot cathode heated by AC electrical power. A power amplifier coupled to a signal generator supplied the filament heating current of the frequency up to about 10 kHz. A hair-pin shaped tungsten filament cathode has excited a steady state plasma in a linear magnetic field. The discharge current fluctuated due to AC heating of the filament but the amplitude of the fluctuation in the discharge current can be reduced down to less than 2 % of the average discharge current. The AC operation of the filament has realized a prolonged lifetime of up to about 150% times an ordinary DC heated filament.
