Abstract

We analyzed MIDI songs from (i) ten composers each from three genre – Rock, Jazz and Classical music – and from (ii) a ten year period of three genre – Rock, Pop and Country music, using complex networks. Betweenness centrality, clustering coefficient, degree and radius have been analyzed. Classical music networks obtained high betweenness centrality and radius while Rock music networks obtained a high clustering coefficient. These network parameters give information on the structure of the network and of the song. For the comparison of music networks over time, no significant difference in the network properties for Rock and Pop music. However, the betweenness centrality and radius of Country music networks was observed to be higher through the years.
