A project status report: Preliminary findings of the CHED assessment of Institutions offering Physics programs
Abstract
The Commission on Higher Education released Memorandum Order No. 20 : Policies and Standard for Undergraduate Physics Programs in 2007 to all higher education insitutions (HEI) offering BS Physics/Applied Physics programs. This year the Technical Panel for Physics and a pool of Technical Assessors visited (and are visiting) 27 schools offering various physics degrees. The aim of the visits is to check the school for compliance and to craft a report on the state of physics programs in the Philippines. The minimum requirements for physics programs include the number of qualified faculty, the use of recommended textbooks, and the availability of infrastructure to support instruction and research . We have found a significant need for physics faculty around the Philippines. This talk aims to give a preliminary report on how many and where qualified physics faculty are needed and to discuss the options available to those who wish to fill the need.
