Characterization of Philippine lightning flashes from a South-East Asian lightning detection network
Abstract
A lightning detection network have been used to obtain lightning flashes in the Philippines for the year 2009. A total of 239,727 flashes were detected, 92% of which were negative cloud-to-ground flashes and the rest were cloud-to-cloud (7%) and positive cloud-to-ground (1%) lightning. This result was expected since -CG lightning is associated with monsoonal type thunderstorms common in the region. Maximum and minimum lightning activity occurred in July and February, respectively, and corresponded with outgoing longwave radiation especially during the Southwest monsoon period. Lightning current amplitude and duration distribution is also presented.
