Determination of the coefficient of static friction of granular materials
Abstract
We measure the coefficient of static friction μs of monodispersed granular materials consisting of tapioca balls. We constructed an apparatus for measuring the granular materials-on-granular materials coefficient of static friction, μs. From the ratio between the applied weight at which the granular starts to slide pass each other and the normal force, we determined that the mean μs of Tapioca pearls is 0.689 with a standard deviation of 0.0256. The ability to measure an intrinsic property of granular material is very important to understanding its behavior.
