Mobile phone-based microscope for blood cell imaging and count applications
Abstract
A low-cost lightweight microscopy attachment for mobile phones was designed and contructed, purposely to sample images of white blood cells (WBC) and red blood cells (RBC), and to facilitate WBC counts. Venous blood samples were extracted from patients with low, normal and high cellularity, and were prepared following a standard clinical method. The counts for each sample performed using the device were averaged and compared with the counts performed by a standard light microscope. Towards the end, the device demonstrated the potential to replace standard microscope as the main tool for imaging WBC and RBC and performing WBC counts.
