Exclusive or not: Modeling the mix of truck and jeepney lanes
Abstract
With the increase in online shopping and other logistic needs, it has become a usual sight for large trucks to share the road with various public transport vehicles. Though the mere presence of trucks slow down passenger transport, severe truck bans and restrictions are not viable. Here we show how the interplay of designated lanes, either for prioritizing or banning of certain types affect public transport travel time and vehicular flow. Our model incorporates vehicle size heterogeneity, passenger pick-ups, and unloading behavior in a modified Nagel-Schreckenberg model of a two-lane road. We found that mutually-exclusive lanes at low-density states result to relatively faster truck speeds without introducing severe passenger travel delays. Similarly, mutually-exclusive lanes at congested states yields relatively low travel delays without adverse effects on trucks' speed.
