Visualization of a simulated submarine groundwater discharge using schlieren imaging
Abstract
Submarine groundwater discharges (SGDs) play a crucial role in various environmental and ecological processes. However, due to their depth and location, they are difficult to access, making it challenging to visualize their influence and extent on the local environment. This paper aims to simulate submarine groundwater discharges in a laboratory setting using an aquarium, and determine the feasibility of tracking their movement using schlieren imaging techniques. The results demonstrate that this method is feasible, as the fringes between the ambient water from aquarium and the modeled SGD are highly visible, allowing for measurement using particle image velocimetry (PIV).
