A technique for wound area measurement using stereometry and mesh analysis

Abstract

For chronic wounds, periodic monitoring and wound analysis is important in diagnosing and reevaluation of the treatment being given. However, current wound area measurement methods in the Philippines are either invasive or inaccurate. In this study, we propose a non-invasive method of measuring the surface area of any 3D image using stereometry and mesh analysis. The set-up speeds up the process since it will only take one to five minutes to capture an object at different vantage points. Images captured using a smartphone camera were processed to create a 3D reconstruction using Agisoft Metashape. The 3D model was also rescaled in Agisoft and was processed in MATLAB to get an experimental value of the surface area. Hence, given a Stanford Triangle format or .ply file, we can obtain the surface area with little to no error.
