Advancing smart city studies in the Philippines: Opportunities and implications
Abstract
Smart cities have become increasingly popular in recent years, with many countries around the world launching initiatives to develop their own smart city projects. In the Philippines, however, smart city studies are still in their early stages, with only a few initiatives currently in place. This presents an exciting opportunity for researchers and stakeholders to contribute to the development of smart city projects in the country. To build successful smart cities in the Philippines, several components are needed, including the deployment of sensors and the internet of things, infrastructure, good governance and strong political will, funding, and technical skills in data engineering and data analyses. These components are essential for ensuring that smart city projects are sustainable and meet the needs of citizens. In this talk, we share our experience working on smart city projects in Baguio City, including our findings in data modeling and analysis. These insights can be valuable for policymakers to implement actionable strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of life of the citizens.
