Abstract

We report the dependence of the defect mode properties on the dimension of the periodic layers of fractal medium-based one-dimensional photonic crystals with an integer medium-based defect layer. We show that the dependence of the defect mode properties, such as the peak position, peak height, and number of defect modes, on the dimension of the periodic layers differs for photonic crystals with asymmetric and symmetric structures. It is also possible to merge defect modes in symmetric photonic crystals by varying the dimension of the periodic layers. Both types of structures exhibit multiple sharp peaks in the wavelength-dependent transmissivity plots. The presence of multiple sharp peaks in the transmissivity of the photonic crystals indicates potential application as a multichannel filter.
