Assessment of ERA5 reanalysis of the observed temperature in the Philippines
Abstract
This study assesses the performance of ERA5 in predicting surface air temperature against the observation in the Philippines and the effect of different seasons. The 26 PAGASA stations were used in the study to represent Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao at different seasons. The results show that there is a high reliability performance of ERA5 for Luzon and Visayas while a slight decrease was observed for Mindanao. The reanalysis and observed data was comparable with 1.3‒2.1 RMSE range and ±2°C standard deviation in all seasons. Meanwhile, the performance of ERA5 in highly elevated stations like Baguio showed a difficulty in simulating temperature. Overall, ERA5 shows a strong correlation when compared to observations and there is good confidence in its simulation and representation of surface air temperature in the Philippines.
