Recurrence plot analysis of Internet access user activity
Abstract
We analyze the dynamics of a time series by its recurrence properties. The method of recurrence plot (RP) is used to visualize recurrences and was then extended from graphical interpretation into statistical analysis using recurrence quantification analysis (RQA). Recurrence plots are useful in finding transitions and interrelations ideal for chaotic systems and complex systems. In this paper, we implement the approach to Internet access user activity of the Diliman Network (DILNET) system in the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). Extending into the use of cross recurrence plots, we were able to analyze the five-day data set, focusing on the RQA measure of recurrence rate r. From this, we were able to measure presence of recurrence of a day's dynamical pattern into another day, indicating similarity in dynamics.Downloads
