Quantum scattering from anisotropic potentials: From quantum dots to ultracold molecules

Abstract

Recent exciting experiments show interesting quantum phenomena exhibited by interacting systems with anisotropic geometry such as molecules at ultracold temperatures in the order of μK and ring-shaped quantum dots. It is, therefore, of interest to look at quantum theoretical models that naturally incorporate anisotropic potentials for which closed form solutions could be obtained. These should then be a good springboard for the study of nontrivially shaped molecular systems colliding or interacting at different initial orientations. We thus review our earlier theoretical results for quantum scattering from classes of noncentral potentials obtained via the Feynman path integral approach, and via the differential approach for Wigner generalized angular momentum harmonics, and see how we could connect these to the needed theoretical framework for quantum phenomena recently observed in newly achieved quantum experimental conditions.

Ma. Victoria Carpio-Bernido and her husband, Christopher Bernido, are 2010 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees for "their purposeful commitment to both science and nation, ensuring innovative, low-cost, and effective basic education even under conditions of great scarcity and daunting poverty." They introduced the Central Visayan Institute Foundation (CVIF) Dynamic Learning Program (DLP), an evidence-based strategy that devotes 70 percent class time to learning activities with well-defined targets for independent learning. Indicators show high performance levels of their students many of whom come from economically challenged families. She is presently directress of the CVIF High School Department, while also a Visiting Physics Professor of the University of San Carlos, Cebu, and Honorary Physics Professor of the Mindanao State University--Iligan Institute of Technology. She obtained her B.S.~Physics degree from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman (1982), M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the State University of New York at Albany, USA (1986, 1989). She was a postdoctoral research fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany in 1996-97. She taught physics courses for several years at the UP National Institute of Physics, where she was recognized for excellence in teaching and research. Her publications in international journals are on quantum mechanics, stochastic and infinite dimensional analysis, and non-Markovian transport phenomena.
