Spectroscopic studies of low pressure hydrogen DC glow discharge

Abstract

In this study, the spectroscopic properties of low pressure hydrogen DC glow discharge were investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. The study primarily aims to observe the effects of varying the applied potential on the glow discharge at a fixed gas pressure of 100 mTorr. The principal hydrogen emission lines observed were 463.34 nm, 486.38 nm, 602.04 nm and 656.25 nm. It was also found that the spectral lines in the cathode glow region have higher intensity than in the negative glow region, which can be attributed to the sputtering on the cathode surface. The particles ejected from the cathode surface due to ion bombardment react with hydrogen species. However, the integrated intensities of the negative glow were higher than the cathode glow region. The observed hydrogen emission lines were in agreement with the literature values.
