Low-dose neutron sterilization of E. coli: A preliminary study
Abstract
The effect of low-dose neutron irradiation on E. coli bacteria was investigated. Equivalent doses of Cf-252 for different locations were measured using thermoluminiscent dosimeters. A non-pathogenic strain of E. coli culture was used to represent Gram-negative bacteria. The sterilization effect was quantified using the spread plate technique by manually counting number of bacteria colony that survived in broth solution before and after neutron irradiation. The low-dose neutron source showed potential in sterilizing or killing the bacteria but complete sterilization was not observed.
