Comparative study on thermomechanical characterization of carbon black and carbon spheres for carbon-PMMA nanocomposites
Abstract
PMMA-CS/CB nanocomposites were prepared using Poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA as matrix and commercially available Carbon Black (CB) and synthesized Carbon Spheres (CS) as fillers. Sample films were synthesized using sedimentation and spin coating to mix the carbon filler into PMMA matrix. Thermal and electrical properties of the samples were investigated using TGA, DMA and I-V curve measurement. TGA obtained the thermal degradation of Anisole (~185oC), Monomeric methacrylate (~312oC) and PMMA (~367oC) respectively. DMA showed that PMMA-CS had a higher elastic modulus (~895MPa) in comparison with PMMA-CB (~840MPa). I-V measurements suggest that the samples with more dispersive carbon fillers on the PMMA matrix exhibit higher value of electrical conductivity.
