Negative-index metamaterials: Waveguide applications
Abstract
We investigate the properties of metamaterials with both negative permitivitty and permeability through analytic and numerical simulations. Metamaterial-integrated waveguides have very interesting properties leading to exciting applications. Typical waveguides are made up of conventional materials which rely on total internal reflection (TIR). Here, we model multiple pairs of doubly-positive-double-negative (DPS-DNG) media making up a waveguide and we look at the modes formed inside the waveguide. The transmission spectrum at several frequencies of the DPS-DNG waveguide is compared to that of a pure DPS waveguide. We also show the natural phase compensation capability of the DPS-DNG waveguide as a result of the DNG's anti-parallel nature of the group and phase velocity.
