Effective optical lensing in ferrofluids
Abstract
The potential of ferrofluids as an optical lens is investigated. Incident to a laser beam, it is found that ferrofluids display an inherent tendency to diverge the passing beam. As a function of ferrofluid concentration, it is observed that the higher the ferrofluid ratio of the sample medium the narrower the beam divergence. The controllability of the ferrofluid as a lens was shown, with the transmitted beam width decreasing as the current in the coil increases.
