Abstract

We determined the students’ preferences and performance in kinematics problems using multiple representations. Respondents were 85 students of Physics Division, Inst of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, Univ of the Philippines – Los Baños. A 20-item multiple representations quiz and a 5- item survey was given. Results showed that students’ mean score value was highest in the verbal quiz. There was also no significant association between the problem and the representational format used to express the problem. Mathematical representation was most preferred. There was no association between the students’ representational format preference and age, gender, subject and the number of times the subject was taken. Lastly, there was no significant difference among the respondents’ performance expressed in their most preferred representational format.
