Abstract

In this paper, we simulate the dynamics of cars in U-turn slots and straight roads using a cellular automata model. Three scenarios are investigated for the U-turn configuration: a) cars stay on their lanes; b) cars change lane at one location in the curve; c) cars change lane anywhere in the curve. Results show car density is affected by car velocities and car interactions in the system. It is also observed that the dynamics of traffic for the U-turn is similar to that of a straight road if cars stay on their lane. However, car density increases and the mean velocity of cars and mean flow decrease if cars are allowed to change lane. These changes are even emphasized if cars change lane anywhere in the curve.
