Microclimate analysis of different areas in a painting for both controlled and uncontrolled conditions
Abstract
The results of experiments investigating the microclimate experienced by a contemporary painting for different conditions are presented. The first set of experiments involves temperature and RH control that aims to create a suitable environment for artwork conservation. The other experiment involves uncontrolled conditions simulating actual museum conditions including the presence of an air-conditioning system and gallery viewers. Three digital temperature and RH sensors were attached on the painting. Results show that different areas on the painting experience different temperatures and RH values. This is significant because the external environment that affects the backs of paintings should also be considered upon artwork display in museums.
