Abstract

This paper discusses the construction of a black carbon (BC) reflectometer used to effectively measure BC contents on Nucleopore filters. The relationship between reflectance and surface BC content is studied to construct a calibration equation for the instrument. Comparison of obtained relation to data from the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited (GNS Science) in New Zealand reveals that the constructed reflectometer is reliable in analyzing surface BC concentration. Analysis of BC concentration of the years 2006-2007 suggests an inverse relation to the Indian Ocean Dipole Mode Index (DMI).
