Effect of focused light beam on the optical and magnetic properties of ferrofluid
Abstract
We investigate the effect of a focused laser beam on the magnetic properties of ferrofluids. The magnetooptical properties of ferrofluids are probed using a custom-made beam-scanning microscope. Spontaneous fluid motion is observed upon the introduction of the laser beam as well as the alignment of the ferrofluid magnetic moment upon the introduction of an external magnetic field. The optical power threshold at which ripple formation at the ferrofluid fluid is observed is found to be in the range 40-44 mW at the focus of the objective lens. Evidence of the single photon effect was also observed.
