Abstract

Relationship between occurrence of biomass burning and the Oceanic Niño index (ONI) and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) in the years 2005 to 2006 was investigated using geostationary satellite data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The data were gathered and accessible through the Fire Locating and Modeling of Burning Emissions (FLAMBE) project’s website. To study the effects of La Niña and El Niño on the occurrences of biomass burning, graphs and records of biomass burning occurrences in the Philippines were generated. The results showed that in late 2005 and early 2006, when the ONI was negative and the SOI value was positive, biomass burning in the country decreased.
