Diverse carbothermal ZnO crystal habit and their optical properties
Abstract
The formation of diverse crystal habit of zinc oxide was investigated via carbothermal reduction route at 900°C. The crystal growth depends on the amount of carbon present in the precursor. Low ZnO:C ratio produced structures with smaller diameters. The presence of minute amount of carbon led to the formation of globular structures. Various regions in the substrate containing different structures like wires, rods, tubes and tetrapods resulted from the inhomogeniety of the boundary diffusion layer due to the vapor current induced by the set-up. The photoluminescence spectra of these structures were taken and a band gap emission at around 390 nm was observed corresponding to a band gap energy of 3.20 eV.
