Microcontroller-based data logging instrument for measuring hydrogen sulfide gas concentration at Mudspring, Los Baños, Laguna
Abstract
A microcontroller-based data logging instrument to determine the H2S gas concentration at Mudspring, Los Baños, Laguna was designed and implemented. The instrument uses a three-electrode H2S sensor and an ATMEGA16L microcontroller. The fabricated instrument uses inexpensive commercially available components making it cheaper compared to existing H2S gas meters. Aside from the intention of developing instruments locally, the study also aimed to use the instrument to determine if the H2S gas concentration at Mudspring, a popular tourist area in Los Baños, Laguna, is safe to humans and animals.
The developed instrument used in the study showed that the highest one-minute H2S gas concentration average recorded at Mudspring was 0.7 ppm which is below the 10 ppm threshold limit set by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. From the results, it was concluded that the H2S gas emission at Mudspring, Los Baños does not pose adverse health effects to humans and animals in the area.
