Wind energy potential for the Philippines: A preliminary study
Abstract
A method for constructing climatological maps of wind energy potential is described. The method consists of predicting the wind with the RegCM3 atmospheric model and then converting the wind into units of wind energy. The model is time dependent and nonlinear. The model equations are numerically integrated in order to compute the total wind speed for each month of the year 2000. Maps of total monthly wind speed for January and July are presented. In addition, the monthly wind speed variations for several meteorological stations are shown. Comparison of the monthly variations for three stations (Cuyo, Basco, and Pagasa Island) with wind speed observations of PAGASA indicates that the model is reasonably accurate.
