Abstract

In this paper, we present a vector approach to find the relative dimensions of a rectangular parallelepiped based only on one of its perspective images. We used the parallel and perpendicular constraints of the object to locate the three vanishing points of its image and the observer position. This 3D reconstruction method yields a set of nonlinear equations whose solutions we verify using a photograph of a box of known dimensions. Though the results here may be automated, the method still breaks down if some of the vanishing points are at infinity.
