Statement analysis misconceptions regarding thermodynamics
Abstract
A study on students' statement analysis misconception regarding thermodynamics was conducted. Statements concerning this topic were organized and constructed into questionnaires. In these, there is an original statement and several derived statements were constructed based on the former. These were then given to PHYS 3 (General Physics I) students.
Results show that students have a tendency to drop some words from the original statement in their statement analysis. The reason behind this may be explained based from the idea that old information contained in the students’ schema may intervened with the analysis of the derived statement by false application of the old limited statement in the schema to the derived statement.
Furthermore, the result may be also explained based from the idea that the human brain tends to select only important points so as to conserve energy in the assimilation of information. The selection process is thus in one respect, an energy dependent process.
