Current situation of science and engineering higher education in the country and in the Asia-Pacific
Abstract
In this talk, I report about the common and specific problems in Science and Engineering University Education between the Philippines and other Asia-Pacific countries. In the Philippines, the problem is of quantity and quality, too few graduates and uneven quality of skills among these few. A working solution to these twin problems is reported in the practice of two of the top research institutes in the University of the Philippines, the Marine Science Institute and the National Institute of Physics – how they are able to attract graduate students and PhDs, to publish regularly, and to obtain funding. I also discuss about the support the University of the Philippines has instituted to boost research productivity.
