The Taylor tube as an apparatus for vibration modes and modulus of elasticity measurements
Abstract
We demonstrate the potential and capability of the Taylor tube as a measurement apparatus for the determination of the vibration resonance and the modulus of elasticity of wooden plates. In particular, we tested different types of wood – which variety and thickness are commonly used in making acoustic guitars. Furthermore, the values obtained were correlated to guitar makers' classification of these types of wood as to their recommended usage. We find that the measurement results are consistent with the recommendations found effective in practice.
