Abstract

We prototype an instrumentation protocol that will enable distant researchers to remotely operate and control a shared research facility. This is implemented using wireless communication networks via GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) in combination with wireless computer networking (WLAN). A test workbench is built from an existing confocal microscope, utilized for semiconductor failure analysis, which can be controlled by a mobile handset using custom-designed software. A simulated General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) connection enabled simultaneous, real time monitoring of the reflectance and current images as they are acquired.
To push wireless coverage outside the laboratory, we forward a framework where access within the institute can be controlled by an Enterprise Access Point while acquisition beyond will ride on latest mobile technology via Short Messaging Service (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and General Packet Radio (GPRS), enabling connectivity virtually anywhere where service is made available by a communications provider.
